Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz is proud to present LA-based composer-conductor Derrick Spiva Jr. and Bridge to Everywhere, a classical chamber ensemble dedicated to performing music by composers who celebrate cultural diversity through interwoven musical traditions. “Music without Borders” features five world-premieres of original works by Spiva — all inspired by traditional music from Ghana, India, Mexico, Eastern Europe and beyond.

The ensemble is comprised of twenty musicians whose passion and excitement for new music move them to explore the unfamiliar. From harp and string quartet, to oud and electric guitar, piano to synthesizer, and tabla to gung-gong drums, Bridge to Everywhere strives to build new bridges between instruments, genres, cultures and people.

Spiva’s music has been described as “transcendent, unifying, danceable” by Orenda Records and “enormous fun to listen to” by Los Angeles Times. In 2014, he was awarded New Music USA’s prestigious “Music Alive, New Partnerships” residency with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO). His works have been premiered by LACO, Salastina Music Society, UCLA Philharmonic, and Los Angeles Electric 8, among others. Derrick Spiva Jr. and Bridge to Everywhere’s debut album, Prisms, Cycles, Leaps, was released in 2015.

“Music without Borders” features: Hannah Arista, voice; Ben Bartelt, viola; Pierre Derycz, cello; Nic Gerpe, keyboard; Randy Gloss, percussion; Philip Graulty, guitar; Mark Gutierrez, bass; Yvette Holzwarth, violin; Rachel Iba, violin and voice; Dmitri Mahlis, oud; Jacqueline Marshall, harp; Rachel Mellis, flute; Marc Nimoy, guitar; Gavin Templeton, flute and saxophone; Nikki Shorts, viola; Ian A.
